The Crane Dog

The “CraneDog” is a fable that tells of the story of many Japanese-Filipino children (JFCs). The story starts with the fateful meeting of a female dog and a crane. Although they are two different creatures, they fell in love with each other. However, there came a time when the crane had to leave his dog and go back to his native land.

After the separation, the female dog met a male dog and they got married. The male dog accepted the fact that the female dog is pregnant with a child not his. The female dog gave birth to a cranedog, a cross between her mother and father.

As Cranedog was growing up, he was being bullied by other dogs because of his appearance. Even his stepbrother, Bully dog, teases him because of his looks. He confronted his mother about it and found out that his father is a crane. This made her think a lot about his own identity.

One day, he decided to leave their house and search for his real father. He traveled far and wide until he arrived in the land of the cranes. His search was not futile. He eventually met his crane father and they talked. He learned that his crane father has his own crane family. But he also told him that he loved him and his mother dog. Father Crane taught CraneDog how to fly as cranes do and eventually, he was no longer alienated from the other cranes.

“The CraneDog” was written by award-winning scriptwriter Michiko Yamamoto.
