The formal turn-over of the project “Building Capacities of Women and their Japanese-Filipino Children” by the Japan Embassy to DAWN was held.

DAWN Executive Director Carmelita Nuqui was re-elected President of the Philippine Migrants Rights Watch.

February 2010
DAWN and the Japan Embassy in Manila signed a Grant Contract for the funding of the project “Building Capacities of Women and their Japanese-Filipino Children.” The project amounting to US$78,795 which covers the purchase of machines and equipment for the skills training of mothers as well as for the conduct of various workshops for both the women and children is funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects or GGP.

DAWN Executive Director Carmelita Nuqui was Re-elected Board Member of CARAM Asia. She was also voted to head its Task Force on Migration, Globalization and Development.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) recognized DAWN’s Multi-Purpose Cooperative as an emerging good practice.

Mary Joy Barcelona was awarded by Soroptimist International as one of the twelve “Unsung Women Heroes of 2009.”

DAWN put up the DAWN Wellness Center.

DAWN assisted its women members in the formation of the DAWN Multi-Purpose Cooperative which was registered with the Cooperative Development Authority.

Sikhay Coordinator Mary Joy Barcelona wins 2nd Place in the Soroptimist International regional award for the category “Making a Difference in Women.”

The Department of Social Welfare and Development recognized DAWN for its valuable contribution for the promotion/protection of the rights and welfare of disadvantaged women towards women empowerment and development.

DAWN and DAWN-Japan launched the Japanese version of the book “Moving On” at the Tokyo Women's Plaza.

In celebration of its 10th year founding anniversary, DAWN organized a conference on Migration and Trafficking in Persons with the theme "Recognizing the Dignity and Rights of Women." The said event was co-organized by Vital Voices Global Partnership.

DAWN launched its third publication, “Moving On: Stories of DAWN Women Survivors” which presents twelve inspiring stories of DAWN women returnees who have survived the odds as former entertainers in Japan.

DAWN launched its video documentary, “Where Do I Belong? – Former Entertainers and Japanese-Filipino children”which features the DAWN women and children members sharing their personal struggles --- how they managed to overcome the odds, to move on and redirect their lives through the programs and services of DAWN.

DAWN launched its book, “Pains and Gains: A Study of Overseas Performing Artists in Japan from Pre-departure to Reintegration,” which comprehensively presents DAWN’s year-long research and the complete proceedings of the September 17 conference.

DAWN organized with the Commission on Human Rights the “Conference on Overseas Performing Artists in Japan – Addressing a Range of Issues from Pre-departure to Reintegration” at the Manila Pavilion Hotel. DAWN’s research findings on OPAs were presented in this event from which responses and recommendations were made by the participants from the Philippines and Japan.

DAWN joined the OFW Journalism Consortium, a group of NGOs and media practitioners that write and broadcast news and features on Philippine migration issues.

DAWN staff, members, and volunteers participated in the 2001 NGO Forum of the World Conference Against Racism, Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (WCAR)Durban, South Africa. DAWN’s Executive Director Carmelita Nuqui presented her paper while then DAWN member, Mary Joy Barcelona spoke during the Workshop on Promoting Human Security to Prevent Exploitative Migration in Africa with Special Emphasis on Trafficking in Women and Children and during the Public Hearing of Migrant Workers at the Asia-Pacific Tent, Kingsmead Cricket Auditorium.

Inauguration of DAWN Women’s Center in Malate, Manila. It is a three-story building which houses the handloom- weaving and tie-dye projects and also serves as a transient house for women and children, a half-way home for Japanese volunteers, and a convenient venue for workshops and training.

DAWN and DAWN-Japan launched its study tour program for Japanese individuals and groups who are interested on various social, economic and political issues affecting migration.

Teatro Akebono Women’s “Iba’t-Ibang Mukha ni Misty” (The Different Faces of Misty) and the JFCs’ “Walang Iwanan” (No Desertion) musical play performed and toured five prefectures in Japan.

DAWN Shelter Campaign for Women and Children was launched at Bayview Park Hotel, Manila.

DAWN’s initial venture into publishing through RA 8042: A Critical Assessment of the Migrant Workers and Filipinos Act of 1995, an offshoot of a joint research conducted by DAWN and Kaibigan ng OCWs.

Three women were trained and started the tie-dye components of Sikhay.
May 1999
Starting this month, DAWN launched other alternative livelihood projects for its women. Three women underwent basic sewing skills and were further trained as SIKHAY members. A community-based sewing group in Marikina was formed. Interested women were also assisted in their individual projects like hair culture and food preparation.
September 1998
Teatro Akebono became the official name of DAWN's Theatre Program. It toured several Metro Manila campuses and different prefectures in Japan with its initial offering, “Sana… Isang Kuwento ng Pangarap.”

Sikhay's first full-color catalogue, showcasing its products, was conceptualized, designed, and printed

DAWN-Japan became operational. DAWN-Japan is DAWN's liason office in Japan and is envisioned to strengthen DAWN's advocacy work and to enhance "communication lines" in Japan. DAWN-Japan has started contacting the Japanese-Filipino children's father through Ms. Yoko Nakazawa, DAWN-Japan Coordinator.

DAWN's Advisory Council was formed. The Advisory Council is composed of experts in fields relevant to DAWN's concerns. It was composed then of Cong. Bonifacio H. Gillego, Sr. Mary John Mananzan, Bishop Julio Xavier Labayen, Ms. Yayori Matsui, Atty. Kenshi Nishida, and Sen. Masako Owaki.

DAWN Theater took its first "theatrical bow" with the premiere performance by the Japanese-Filipino children in the musical play, “Fujiwara Junko: JFC,” for the visiting Japanese Peace Boat participants. DAWN Theatre is a partnership with the Philippine Education Theatre Association (PETA), and aims to help improve the confidence and skills of the Japanese-Filipino children and to advocate their rights as children

DAWN joined the Philippine Migrants Rights Watch (PMRW), a nine-member civil society network that works for the protection, upholding and defense of the rights of our overseas Filipinos. DAWN’s Executive Director Carmelita Nuqui has been PMRW president since year 2000

The Development Action for Women Network (DAWN) was registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a non-profit, non-stock, non-government organization whose main mission is to assist migrant women and their families get back to the mainstream of Philippine society.
